Just across the water from East Java lies Bali, an island of elegant temples, verdant landscapes of paddy fields, soaring volcanic peaks and glorious golden beaches. A perfect tropical paradise, where culture and artistry combine with friendly, smiling locals and tasty local cuisine. The biggest and liveliest resorts are the towns of Kuta, adjacent Tuban and Legian and nearby Seminyak, where nightlife goes on until the small hours. Quieter beaches are at Lovina and Candi Dasa, appealing to those looking for a more relaxed holiday. The manicured gardens and peaceful sands of Nusa Dua are a popular choice, whilst Benoa and Sanur are perhaps better for getting out to small local estaurants and shops. Shopping opportunities abound everywhere, although some haggling is required for a bargain. Most visitors also spend time in Bali’s cultural centre of Ubud, renowned for its painting, carving, dancing and music-making. The neighboring island of Lombok, with its beautiful beaches and temples, is 22 miles east of Bali at its closest point. It differs considerably from its Hindu neighbor, with lots of wide-open spaces unspoiled beaches, and much less traffic. The big draws are the white beaches at the resort of Senggigi on the northwest coast, the idyllic trio of Gili Islands just offshore, and Mount Rinjani, a volcanic mountain in a national park. The islands can be visited at any time of year, but the cooler, drier season is from April to October.
